The Vern Riffe Center for the Arts has had close partnerships with area arts organizations extending back over 20 years.
Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association (SOPAA) – SOPAA and its predecessors (Civic Music and the Southern Ohio Community Concert Association) have been bringing performances to our area since the early 1900’s! Our VOLUNTEER working board has been incredibly dedicated and many have served faithfully for 10-20 years! The Covid-19 pandemic impacted the Arts nationally and in our community with the suspension of ALL programming. “During this time, it provided us with an opportunity to review the role of our board and consider future options. After many virtual meetings and in consultation with the University, the Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association voted to dissolve our organization, effective June 30, 2021. We will transition to an Advisory Board, consulting with and providing assistance to the VRCFA team in programming decisions and fundraising efforts.”
-Rhoni Maxwell-Rader (SOPAA Board President)
Portsmouth Area Arts Council (PAAC) – when the Vern Riffe Center was built, arts organizations in the Portsmouth area were offered office space within the building. PAAC accepted the offer and has been in residence ever since. PAAC provides many services to the community from their season and Christmas event calendars to sponsorship the Artistic and Creative Excellence awards ceremonies. Their signature program is the Portsmouth Area Children’s Theater and related family programming.
Portsmouth Wind Symphony (PWS) – another productive alliance has been with PWS. The Symphony is provided with free rehearsal space in the Howland Recital Hall in return for teaching music classes to university students. In addition to presenting their concerts at the Vern Riffe Center, Portsmouth Wind Symphony appears around the area at many events, including their annual July 4th concert in Tracy Park.
